Magnesium Ferrosilicon
Magnesium Ferrosilicon is added to molten cast iron in order to convert the graphite shape from a flake network found in gray iron to spheroidal for ductile iron. The evenly distributed graphite spheres or nodules greatly increase the cast irons strength and give ductile iron elongation prior to failure. Hickman, Williams & Company offers many varieties of Magnesium Ferrosilicon Alloys. From a 3 to 4 percent magnesium alloy for minimal reactivity and high magnesium recovery, to the standard 5 to 6 percent magnesium alloy for normal practices. Both magnesium levels of this alloy are also available in multiple rare earth ranges and compositions.
